![]() ![]() By the period of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, the Babylonian astronomers were making regular records of the positions of the planets and systematic observations of their behavior. In Mesopotamian texts, Mars is referred to as the "star of judgement of the fate of the dead." The existence of Mars as a wandering object in the night sky was also recorded by the ancient Egyptian astronomers and, by 1534 BCE, they were familiar with the retrograde motion of the planet. During Sumerian times, Nergal was a minor deity of little significance, but, during later times, his main cult center was the city of Nineveh. The ancient Sumerians named Mars Nergal, the god of war and plague. Even more notable are the perihelic oppositions of Mars, which are distinguished because Mars is close to perihelion, making it even closer to Earth. The history of observations of Mars is marked by the oppositions of Mars when the planet is closest to Earth and hence is most easily visible, which occur every couple of years. Main article: History of Mars observation Over the millennia it has been featured in culture and the arts in ways that have reflected humanity's growing knowledge of it. Mars has been observed since ancient times. It is among the brightest objects in Earth's sky, with an apparent magnitude that reaches −2.94, comparable to that of Jupiter and surpassed only by Venus, the Moon and the Sun. This appearance, due to the iron oxide prevalent on its surface, has led to Mars often being called the Red Planet. Mars can be viewed from Earth with the naked eye, as can its reddish coloring. There are also planned future missions to Mars, such as a NASA-ESA Mars Sample Return set to happen in 2026, and the Rosalind Franklin rover mission, which was intended to launch in 2018 but was delayed to 2024 at the earliest, with a more likely launch date at 2028. Two countries have successfully deployed rovers on Mars, the United States first doing so with Sojourner in 1997 and China with Zhurong in 2021. NASA's Viking 1 lander transmitted the first images from the Martian surface in 1976. Mars has been explored by several uncrewed spacecraft, beginning with Mariner 4 in 1965. It is not known whether life has ever existed on Mars. In the distant past, Mars was likely wetter, and thus possibly more suited for life. Both of Mars's polar ice caps appear to be made largely of water. Liquid water on the surface of Mars cannot exist due to low atmospheric pressure, which is less than 1% of the atmospheric pressure on Earth. Days and seasons on Mars are comparable to those of Earth, as the planets have a similar rotation period and tilt of the rotational axis relative to the ecliptic plane. The Borealis basin in the Northern Hemisphere covers approximately 40% of the planet and may be a large impact feature. Some of the most notable surface features on Mars include Olympus Mons, the largest volcano and highest-known mountain in the Solar System, and Valles Marineris, one of the largest canyons in the Solar System. Mars has two small, irregularly shaped moons, Phobos and Deimos. Mars has surface features such as impact craters, valleys, dunes, and polar ice caps. Mars has a thin atmosphere and a crust primarily composed of elements similar to Earth's crust, as well as a core made of iron and nickel. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and the third largest and massive terrestrial object in the Solar System.

So we will be receiving a bonus 10 extra features this time around.) (A thought: Could there be a threshold for features in an Apple OS update, or perhaps a “magic” number? I recall that Jobs in 2003 declared there were 140 new improvements in the current “Panther” version. ![]() Some of the new features he demonstrated apply directly to content creation workflows: greater support for 64-bit computing, improvements to OS X’s graphics engine beefier support for graphics coprocessors a new video codec and a new scripting architecture called Automator, code-named Pipeline. Due about a year from now, the update will build on the graphics-savvy technology base found in the current version of the operating system.įrom the keynote stage, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the update will offer 150 new features. This was the case earlier this summer, when at its annual developer conference Apple offered a peek at Mac OS X 10.4, given the “Tiger” name. The resulting message, however, can be less-than focused, or the back-story may be needed for proper interpretation. Instead, vendors such as Apple Computer or Microsoft often put much of their communication efforts for content-creation customers into developer conferences. This has been the case for a number of years. This is a somewhat miserable state of affairs since vendors really have a story to tell content creators with the arrival of affordable 64-bit desktop machines and the slowly rising tide of operating systems and applications that can take advantage of the increased memory and processing power.įor example, no computer system vendor has taken a booth at the annual Seybold San Francisco expo this week (except for Hewlett-Packard and its booth is for printers and scanners). ![]() Nowadays, capturing the pulse of the market from the show floor is more difficult as vendors target the needs of commodity products, business computing, or the consumer segment instead of graphics pros. ![]() In bygone days, system hardware and software vendors would take advantage of trade shows for content creation professionals to pitch the relative merits of their respective platforms: Mac, Windows, whatever. The tapes from the earlier recording session, which Lennon had been holding, were scattered across the floor. Lennon staggered up six steps to the Dakota’s reception area and said “I’m shot,” before collapsing. Two struck Lennon in the left side of his back, and two others penetrated his left shoulder. One bullet missed, passing over Lennon’s head and through a window of the Dakota building. The time was 10.52pm.Ĭhapman is said to have adopted a combat stance and fired five hollow-point rounds at Lennon from a Charter Arms. As he approached the archway leading to the Dakota’s courtyard, Mark Chapman emerged from the shadows. Lennon walked a couple of paces behind Ono. Lennon and Ono decided to stop their limousine at 72nd Street and walk the remaining short distance, despite a secure courtyard being available to park in at the Dakota. Their son was being minded by Helen Seaman, the aunt of their assistant Fred.Īlthough it was late on a December night, the outside temperature was unseasonably warm. Lennon and Ono discussed going for a meal at Stage Deli, but decided to first return to the Dakota to say goodnight to five-year-old Sean Lennon. The recording session came to a close at 10.30pm. During the evening session Lennon also telephoned his aunt Mimi in England, and record label owner David Geffen called by with the news that Double Fantasy had been certified gold in its first two weeks on release. The encounter was photographed by Lennon fan Paul Goresh.Īt the Record Plant Studio at 321 West 44th Street they mixed Ono’s song ‘Walking On Thin Ice’, which featured Lennon on lead guitar. Lennon signed Chapman’s copy of Double Fantasy, after which he asked, “Is this all you want?” Chapman nodded in agreement. Before they entered their car, Lennon was stopped for several people seeking autographs, among them 25-year-old hospital worker Mark David Chapman. Lennon and Ono left the Dakota at 5pm with the RKO team. ![]() One of the images, of a naked Lennon lying on a clothed Yoko Ono, was the last ever taken of the couple together. In the early afternoon Rolling Stone photographer Annie Leibovitz arrived at the Lennons’ apartment for a photo session, which lasted from 2-3.30pm. At around 9.45am he returned to his home at the Dakota to give an interview to Dave Sholin, Laurie Kaye, Ron Hummel and Bert Keane for an RKO Radio Network show. Can a judge like, review, or follow a business online without improperly using the prestige of his office? Indeed, social media is a primary marketing vehicle and a tool for businesses to interact with customers. (The articles appear in the Spring and Summer 2017 editions, available at .) Social media is rife with conversations about products, restaurants, and businesses. Just this year, she published two informative articles about social media and judicial ethics in the quarterly Judicial Conduct Reporter. Cynthia Gray, the director of the Center, is a wonderful resource. The Center for Judicial Ethics of the National Center for State Courts is a useful clearinghouse for judicial ethics and discipline. I frequently consult ethics opinions from other jurisdictions. Because judges in Massachusetts do not need to raise money and campaign, we impose limits on judicial behavior that are sometimes more restrictive than those imposed where judges face the voters.Īlthough a national standard may not be workable, jurisdictions learn from one another. All judges in Massachusetts are appointed until age 70 judges never face the voters nor participate in any other sort of reappointment process. In my opinion, a national standard may be unworkable so long as some state judges are appointed while others are elected. A unified national standard obviously would resolve the differences, but failing that, I suspect our governing ethics bodies will come over time to understand social media better and to reach more consistent conclusions about how judges can and should interact on social media platforms.īERENSON: I serve as counsel to the Massachusetts Committee on Judicial Ethics, and my answers to the questions asked are largely based on advice we have given to Massachusetts judges. But judicial colleagues in many other states are not so lucky and are left to apply general principles and reconcile differing interpretations by different ethical bodies. I am fortunate that the Judicial Ethics Commission in my state, Maryland, has issued a published opinion on the use of social media to guide me and my colleagues. NAZARIAN: We each serve in only one state, or in one federal judiciary, and are subject to only one particular set of ethical rules and rulings. Is this confusing to judges? Should a national standard or recommendation be developed? How would a more unified standard help or harm the profession? State bar ethics commissions offer varying guidelines on how judges may or may not engage on social media. Both offered their candid opinions on the subject, informed by their experiences. Douglas Nazarian, a frequent social media user and a judge on the Maryland Court of Special Appeals, and Barbara Berenson, counsel to the Massachusetts Committee on Judicial Ethics, respond here to questions about whether and how judges might ethically use social media. 112 in April 2017, providing guidance - but no hard and fast rules - that generally discourages federal judges from social media engagement. By contrast, the Judicial Conference Committee on Code of Conduct issued advisory opinion No. That guidance varies widely, but some recent opinions have indicated a less cautious view of social media. Many state bar ethics committees have offered guidance on social media use. Others say social media is just another form of social interaction easily governed by other rules and canons - and that social media may even offer a new way for the judiciary to constructively engage with and educate the public. Some argue that judges should avoid social media altogether. ![]() But the use of these applications presents unique challenges for judges, who are not only judicial officers but also parents, community members, churchgoers, and media consumers.
